Ear Candling or Thermal Auricular Therapy has been used in Britain for over 15 years in the treatment of common ear, nose and throat conditions.
Hopi ear candling, as it is also known, originates from the Hopi Indians of North America. However, it has much more practical applications in today’s world, from balance problems, excessive wax, ringing in ear, migraines, headaches, sinusitis and ear, nose and throat infections.
The candles work by slowly burning down and causing a slight vacuum in the ear, while the natural movement of the flame gently vibrates the air, massaging the eardrum. The heat from the candle helps stimulate the blood circulation in the and also stimulates reflex zones and energy points. The vacuum caused by the candle helps draw out tiny impurities while regulating the pressure within the ear. The candles themselves are made of cotton covered with beeswax and the essential oils sage and chamomile, all organically grown. There is also a small filter within the candle, which prevents any candle wax running into the ear.
During treatment, the client can either turn their head to the side or lie on their side and the lit candle is gently twisted into the auditory canal. The candle is held vertically in this position until it has burned down, this takes approximately 10-15 mins and is then gently removed. The client then either turns their head to the other side or turns over and the process is repeated. After this an ear and face massage can be given to help clear ear and nasal passages. This treatment is both therapeutic and relaxing and the client may find they can hear and breath more easily.
As a precaution, it is advisable not to use ear candles if grommets are in place, if there is inflammation or infection or in the event of an allergic reaction to the contents. Most clients find the treatment relaxing and regularly describe a “slight relieved feeling” in the ears and head but also a relaxing and calming effect on the whole system. Where long-term conditions are being treated, the client sometimes experiences slight headaches and occasional popping shortly after the treatment.
A single treatment may be enough to cause relief and will highlight any need for further treatments. Initially a course of three treatments is generally required for complete cleansing. This is most effective when completed on a weekly basis for three consecutive weeks if possible. A monthly treatment is recommended to maintain the effects.
Ear Candling helps treat a wide range of conditions such as irritation in ears and sinuses, sinusitis, rhinitis, glue ear, colds, flu, headaches and migraine, tinnitus and ringing in the ears, excessive or compacted ear wax to name but a few. It also has a relaxing and calming effect in cases of stress. It is especially beneficial for frequent flyers as it helps to regulate the pressure within the inner ear. The best time to have an ear candling treatment is in the 24 hours before and after a flight.
Ear candles are helpful for conditions affecting the head, ears, nose and throat, such as compacted ear wax, ear aches, glue ear, sinus problems, colds, heyfever, catarrah, tinnitus, headaches, sore throats, pressure problems especially when flying or diving. They also help to relieve stress and promote a restful nights sleep.
